EL DORADO, Ark. -
On Monday, 360 students signed their letter of intent to attend 34 different colleges and universities of their choice through the El Dorado Promise. a $50 million scholarship program funded by the Murphy Oil Corporation in January 2007.

"I'm so excited it's like I'm signing up to my future. I'm going to UCA in Conway to major in. psychology," said student Emily Hall.
Promise scholarships pay up to $7,818 per year for up to 5 years to any college or university in America. The main purpose behind the program is to reduce the financial barriers to attending college for students within the district.

Academic leaders say since the inception of the program, they have an increase in academic gains in both math and reading skills.
"We always celebrate the athletes and so we thought how can we celebrate academics how can we highlight these students that work hard to graduate college," said Bonnie Haynie, Director of Special Projects.

Since the El Dorado Promise start, several surrounding districts, including schools in Tyler, Texas, have considered implementing a similar program.
