Castor is giddy about its shortstop, our Athlete of the Week

Posted: Updated:
Castor, LA - The Castor softball team is on its way to Sulphur for the Louisiana state tournament and going with the Lady Tigers is a special player on what's become a special team, Katelyn Giddens our Athlete of the Week.  The school recently held an academic had ten of the 13 softball players who were in the banquet with 3.5 grade point averages or higher. Co-head coach Joy-Dee Wallace believes “we have the cream of the crop."

The success of a team relies a lot on their leaders, and Castor High School's Katelyn Giddens sets the perfect example on and off the field for the Lady Tigers.

"Katelyn gives 110% no matter what situation we're in,” says Joy-Dee.  “Down, up whatever. She keeps the team up. She leads the team. She's talking to them, keeps them going, gives it all she's got. And that's one thing I never have to worry about with her is that I know that if a ball's hit to her, she's going to do her best to get to it and make the play. One thing about it, if she makes an error or whatever happens, it's next play and we move on and as coaches that's what we want them to do."

Giddens does not shy away from taking a leadership role. “I'm an all-around team player and wherever they need me the most is where I'm going to play to play for them.  I'm comfortable playing anywhere and I never want to let them down."

Giddens’ teammates appreciate the way she keeps everyone excited during games, makes her plays in the field and at the plate and what a good teammate she is off the field as well.

The two- sport athlete also finds time for the books.  Giddens is Castor's salutatorian and maintains a 3.9 GPA.  But there's one thing on Giddens’ mind right now and that's bringing a state championship back to Castor. “It would mean the world,” she says. “It would blow my mind, I know.  I'd be so excited."

So would everyone in Castor.
