Girls rule at school

Posted: Updated:

Who seems happier on report card day? It appears that girls have been delivering better grades in all subjects, in all 30 countries studied by researchers.

The American Psychological Association published the findings by University of New Brunswick researchers. A husband-wife team examined grades of more than one-million boys and girls from 1914 to 2011.

The results? Girls outperformed boys in every class subject. Although the achievement gap was more narrow in math and science, girls still had the better grades.

So why the belief that that boys are better at math and science? Those notions may come from scores on achievement tests like the SAT, rather than school grades.

Some research suggests that girls tend to focus on mastering the material, which leads to good grades in class, while boys value getting the right answer over retaining the information.

The researchers also said this may blow apart the recently held notion of the "boy crisis" -- the worry that boys are falling behind academically in recent years. It now appears this may be a longtime trend.
