DeSoto Parish domestic violence victim remembered as family-oriented, loving mom

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. - Siblings remember Gwenette Salley as a family-oriented, loving mother to her seven-year-old daughter, and one of her last acts Friday likely saved her child's life.

Police say Salley's estranged husband, Michael Salley, killed her days after Gwen filed for divorce. Investigators and witnesses say Gwen was picking up their daughter, Samantha, from a DeSoto Parish day care when Michael jumped into her front passenger-side seat armed with a shotgun. Gwen removed their child from the vehicle and handed her back to a day care worker.

At Gwen's visitation Monday, family members told KTBS 3 News there's no doubt in their mind that they'd be mourning another loss, if not for Gwen's quick reaction.

"She was a very loving mother," Gwen's sister Theresa Donald said. "She dedicated her life to raising her child."

They say she loved being a part of her big family. She was a hard-worker who could hang with the boys, a result of her dairy farm upbringing.

"She loved to hunt and fish- things guys do," Gwen's brother Benjamin Cox remembers. "She grew up around two brothers."

There is a fund to benefit Samantha Salley at Regions Bank. All money raised will go toward her care, and can only be used for that purpose.

If you drive down St Vincent Avenue you'll notice Mall St Vincent is getting a makeover. Officials say the re-investment into Mall St Vincent saved the mall from closing down which would have left the city and this neighborhood with an empty shell of a mall left behind.
