Backyard gator, Shreveport family spot reptile behind home

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -
It's spring and all sorts of animals are waking up from winter in the Arklatex, including alligators.

Folks living in the Haven subdivision behind LSUS have spotted two of the reptiles in a bayou bordering several homes. One family has nick-named a gator that frequents their bank Pete. They spot him every year and haven't been able to get him relocated by wildlife and fisheries. Pete hasn't caused them a problem but recently approached a neighbor.

"We've seen Pete float around in the backyard for a while, but he's never came up to our bank or tried to interact with any of the kids or pets," Kristopher Edgell said. "When the neighbor was out in her canoe with one of her grand kids, he came up to the canoe and gave them quite a scare."

Edgell thinks Pete is about 15 feet long and a smaller alligator has been spotted along with him this spring.
