DeBerry, Texas -

An East Texas community is devastated after a two vehicle wreck Thursday killed a mother and her step-daughter.

According to the PanolaWatchman.com, emergency crews were called to a major accident Thursday evening involving an SUV and an 18 wheeler on FM 31 between Highway 79 North and FM 123 near DeBerry.

Officers on the scene say the driver of a white Tahoe, 34 year-old Darlene Hall and her passenger, 18 year-old Elizabeth Hall were headed southbound when the vehicle entered a curve and because of wet roads, crossed the center line and hit an 18 wheeler head-on.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, who works for Texas Energy, said he entered the ditch after swerving to avoid hitting the Tahoe and then hit a power pole before coming to stop in a wooded area along the road.

The portion of FM 31 between Highway 79 in DeBerry and FM 123 at Jeter's Junction was closed while crews worked to clear the scene.

Funeral services for both women are pending at Hawthorn Funeral Home in Carthage.

Members of the Inter-Community Fire Department, Panola County Sheriff’s Office, and DPS worked the wreck.
