South Highlands Brick Fundraiser

Posted: Updated:
CADDO PARISH (KTBS) - Give a brick, build our future: That is the mission of one Caddo Parish school, looking to make a difference. Since 1924, South Highlands Elementary School has left a lasting impression on those in the community. And now, many are hoping to turn some of the school's bricks into a money-maker.

"We have had alumni. We have had parents, we have had so many people already purchase the bricks. Everybody wants to have a brick that is associated with South Highlands," said Mary Harris, Principal.

Funds are being collected for the project through the project "Give a Brick, Build Our Future."  Harris said through a team effort, the bricks are being sold for a minimum of $125.00 a piece.
"We have been selling the bricks since March. We will continue to sell the bricks until we have completed the entire project. But we are doing it in segments so that we get this first segment done hopefully, maybe by the summer," said Harris.

Caddo's Chief Academic Advisor, Keith Burton, and former principal of the school, said funding will not only go into a capital fund for the project, but for other needs at the school, not covered by taxpayer dollars.

"We saw that there was a need to provide additional funding. We knew that the school district supported South Highlands and area schools but we wanted to do more. So we wanted to reach out to families who wanted to help  make a tax free donation," said Burton.

Local Landscape Architect, Lloyd Overdyke, designed the project. He has several generations of family members who also attended the school. For more information on the Courtyard Beautification Project, call the school at (318) 865-5119 or click here to buy a brick now.
