Shreveport homeowners clean up after Friday's storms

Posted: Updated:
High winds created a mess in North Highland during Friday's storms. Dozens of homeowners were left cleaning up the mess Saturday. Trees fell on homes and their limbs scattered across lawns. One man nearly had a tree land on him.

Chain saws could be heard throughout the neighborhood as homeowners cleared away tree debris. Several homes had near misses but some weren't so lucky. Falling trees nearly sliced them in half. Mason Askins was in his bedroom's doorway when a giant oak tree came crashing down into his home. The roof nearly collapsed onto him as the storm raged outside.

"You heard a lot of creaking noises," Askins said. "You could hear high winds and things hitting the roof. Ultimately, you just saw the whole roof come down."

Storms are wildly unpredictable so the local American Red Cross urges people to be prepared. Kristen Taylor, the organizations's local communications director, says keep tabs on storm systems by listening to the news, using a weather radio or by using the Red Cross weather app.

"When you know that storm is coming you want to take shelter because trees can fall on a home and even cause a death," Taylor said.

Askins was just getting home from work when the storm hit and the tree fell. The tree did more damage you can't see. Askins believes the house will have to be demolished. Anyone affected by this storm can be helped by the Red Cross. Follow this link to the organizations website for numbers to call or to download its safety app.
