Stamp Out Hunger! Shreveport letter carriers collect food

Posted: Updated:
Forty-nine million Americans, that's the estimated number of people the USDA considers food insecure. The US Postal Service acted Saturday to help those in need.

Hundreds of letter carriers at post offices around the nation participated in the 22nd Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Postal workers collected donated, nonperishable food along their routes. They'll sort the thousands of pounds of food and divide the items between various charities around their area. Shreveport's Lynbrook station collected more than 11 thousand pounds of food last year and hopes to beat that record. Postal works encourage you to help those that are hungry.

"Who wants to be hungry?" Richard Scott said. "Let's face it. a lot of our station is the Cedar Grove area. There're a lot of folks that need our help, and if we can help, we will."

Over the last 22 years, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than  one and half billion pounds of food. Last year, alone, nearly 75 million pounds were collected.
