Pop Up Project winner to get free rent for a year

Posted: Updated:
Shreveport's Pop Up Project just got more interesting. One of the businesses setting up shop during the  pilot program will win free rent for a year. The Board of Directors of the Committee of One Hundred is footing the bill to show its support for the idea.

The Committee of One Hundred is dedicated to education, community relations and regional economic development,” says John Atkins, Committee of One Hundred 2014 President and a partner in Atco Investment Co. “We know the value of small businesses to our regional economy and we want to support them. This is a way for us to give a first break to a new small business or to help an existing business expand and hire additional employees.”

“This takes the Pop UP Project to a new level,” says Liz Swaine, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority. “We’re helping the business get their feet wet with two weeks rent-free. The Committee of One Hundred is offering an incentive that could be life-changing to a small business person. This should encourage all those entrepreneurs and small businesses thinking about applying for Pop UP to get their proposal in for the next Pop UP planned for the Central Business District in September!”

The first ever Pop UP Project in the region will run through Friday, May 23 in the Red River District in Downtown Shreveport. Twelve businesses ranging from restaurants to 3-D printing were chosen. Another Pop UP will follow in the fall in the Central Business District, and a third will be held in November in Shreveport Common, the new nine-block art and culture district downtown. At the end of the three Pop Ups, one business will be chosen by the Committee of One Hundred to receive one year of free rent at a downtown storefront location.

The Pop UP Project is open to retail and restaurants with preference given to those businesses that create the most vibrancy, and best meet the needs of the 17,000 employees in downtown Shreveport.

At the close of this Pop UP, information will be posted about Pop UP #2.

The Committee of One Hundred has been in existence since 1961. It is currently composed of 125 active, voting members and 60 additional advisory members who have served as active members for 10 years or more.  Click here for more information about the Committee of One Hundred.
