Life of Service: Fletcher Adams

Posted: Updated:
He wrote every day. She wrote back every other day. And 70 years later, the letters are all here... every one.
"It was like being with him in person," says Aline Adams of Ida, Louisiana.
She and her husband had known each other since grade school growing up in Ida.
When the war came, they got married at a base in California. It would be the last time Aline Adams would every lay eyes on her sweetheart, Fletcher.
Fletcher Adams became a member of one of the greatest fighter squadrons of the second World War: the 357th.
He graduated flight school with Gen. Chuck Yeager and flew alongside Kit Carson and John England One day in January 1945, the 357th shot down 55 German fighters. Fletcher Adams became an ace.
"Today will always be remembered by me. My first German plane," Aline Adams says, reading from a letter from her husband.
But mostly, Capt. Adams wrote about home how much he wanted to get back to his sweetheart and that brand new baby boy. But he would never see little Jerry. Just five weeks after he was born, Capt. Adams was shot down, captured by German police and murdered.
"There was a secret order encouraging the murder of all captured Allied fliers," Jerry Adams recalls.
Aline came home to Ida with Jerry, and never left, nor remarried.
"Never had a date," Aline Adams says. "Didn't want one."
But she did keep those letters, remembering the 22-year-old handsome pilot... alive today in the unspoken words of a husband and and brand new father.
"I'm so glad its a boy. Got the letter today," a letter from Fletcher Adams reads.
