What do I do with my kids this Summer?.......Summer Camps!

Posted: Updated:

Working parents across the ArkLaTex are trying to figure out what to do with their kids in a few weeks.

As we inch closer and closer to Summer time youngsters across the ArkLaTex are getting excited because school will soon be out.

And, that means parents across the ArkLaTex will soon be hearing things like, "Dad,I'm bored" or "Mom there's nothing to do."

We'll there is certainly plenty to do in terms of Summer Camps across the area this year.

"We have a very very unique program within the South, not just in Shreveport but in the South." Louisiana State Representative Roy Burrell talking about the James K. Elrod Biz Camp, of which he is the Managing Director. 2 weeks of intense business training has produced some terrific results over the past 13 years.

"We take it all the way from molding clay. To a point where they realize what kind of business they are going to be a part of, break that business down into minute parts and see what it's components are and cost it out. They do cost analysis, cash projections and they do a business plan in the end where they present it to professional people."

Now if that doesn't sound like something that would interest your kids, maybe they want to get outside and commune with nature. Maybe, they want to go on a safari at Chimp Haven in Keithville.

"We'll have a lot of different games and activities and crafts hopefully enough to suit all kids needs. The goal is to tie it back into our mission, which is to educate people about non-human primates. Each day of the camp well look at a different ape. We'll start with lesser apes then move to gorillas, chimps and other types of apes throughout the week," said Andrea Falcetto, Education Specialist at Chimp Haven.

Some of you in the Bossier/Shreveport metro area might be thinking that sounds good but I don't want to drive to Keithville everyday for a week. Well, you don't have to because bus transportation will be provided from Shreveport, and nowhere else will your kids be able to hang out, safely, with hundreds of amazing Apes.

"Getting to come out and see the chimps would be the highlight of this camp versus some others. We are learning about endangered species and endangered primates and then the campers get to see them right here on our site. We will get a chance to go out and explore some of the habitats throughout the week."

A little closer to home for folks in Bossier is the BPCC Summer Camp called Camp Cavs. This one's got a little something for everyone from music and dance to basketball and baking just to name a few.

Business Developer at BPCC, Sean Downing, is excited about another year of camps,

"Camp Cavs is always a big hit with the community college and the community. It's great for parents because we have camps from PM to PM and from
8am till noon. It's a good time for kids to get out there and learn some fun activities and it also gives mom and dad some time to run some errands and do what they need to do."
