Arkansas issues first same-sex marriage licenses

Posted: Updated:

More than 300 gay couples have been issued marriage licenses since a judge struck down Arkansas' same-sex marriage ban.

Meanwhile, the attorney general and four counties named in the lawsuit have asked justices to suspend Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza's ruling.

Attorneys for a group of same-sex couples are asking the state's high court to reject those efforts.

Most Arkansas clerks have said they would not grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Little River County Clerk DeAnna Sivley says they've gotten a few calls about the issue.

Most counties cited a desire to wait for the state supreme court to weigh in, but some said that since they were not a party to the lawsuit seeking marriage rights for gay couples, they were not covered by the ruling.

Arkansas currently has a law that threatens clerks with fines for "wrongful issuance" of a marriage license.
