SHREVEPORT, La - Teacher stipends are now a thing of the past at LSU-Shreveport. A 40 year tradition of rewarding educators for receiving college level credits is now placing a strain on the bottom line, for the campus.

We are not in a position where we can pay more. As you know higher education is going through some hard times in the state and so we are not going to be able to increase what we pay. But we did want to offer some other options," said Interim Chancellor, Paul Sisson.
Currently, 46 teachers receive a $300.00 stipends a year, and 40 dual enrollment teachers receive $500.00 per semester. Together, that costs the university around $33,000 a year.
"The cooperating teachers are for the most part, they are high school teachers in this area. Caddo parish and surrounding parishes and they work with our undergraduate education majors," said Sisson.

The LSU Shreveport Board of Supervisors approved a measure Friday, that would replace the stipends with exemptions for credit hours.
"The main thing is to really reward those teachers that are looking for life-long learning opportunities," said Sisson.
