Ollie Tyler to announce decision soon on mayor's race

Posted: Updated:
Will former Caddo schools chief Ollie Tyler run for Shreveport Mayor?  The grade is still incomplete.  But we have a big clue that she's giving it very serious consideration.

An advertising agency representing Tyler has made an inquiry to KTBS about making a buy.  The Munson Group of Alexandria requested information on the station's ad rates.

When we asked Tyler about it, she would not go on camera.  But over the phone, she did say she will announce within the week whether she'll run.

She went on to say she's been approached by a "whole lot of people" from "across the community'' asking her to run.

"I've prayed about it," Tyler said.  "I want to make sure I can make a difference.''

Tyler became the first African American and first female Caddo Parish Schools Superintendent in 2003.  In her final year ending in 2007, she was named Louisiana Schools Superintendent of the Year.  She moved on to the state board of education, and became acting state superintendent before leaving in 2011.

But what Tyler as a candidate for mayor?  KTBS political analyst Trey Gibson says there's a big obstacle.

"She's never run for office before. And that means she's going to be running against experienced people who've run for office successfully," Gibson said.  "So she will have to put together a team of experienced people to win a mayor's race."

Tyler would join announced candidates and fellow Democrats Patrick Williams and Roy Burrell, who are both currently Louisiana state representatives.  Former mayor Keith Hightower is also weighing a potential comeback.
