Two Demons hope to come marchin' in

Posted: Updated:
Metairie, La - From NSU Athletics:  Northwestern State defensive tackle Lesley Deamer and safety Bert White are among the participants in the New Orleans Saints' rookie minicamp beginning Friday. Deamer and White were invited to the camp on a tryout basis and could be offered free agent contracts. Deamer (6-3, 304), an Amite product, was a second-team All-Southland Conference choice last fall while White (5-11, 205), from Baton Rouge-Redemptorist, was on the preseason watch list for the Senior Bowl, overcame a sprained knee in preseason and finished strongly down the stretch of his senior year.

The Saints coaching staff will conduct five practices beginning Friday morning and wrapping up Sunday afternoon, led by head coach Sean Payton. Deamer will be working under NSU graduate Bill Johnson, who played center for the Demons from 1975-79 and began his coaching career under coaches A.L. Williams and Sam Goodwin. Johnson has been the Saints' defensive line coach since their Super Bowl championship season in 2009, and previously coached in Denver and Atlanta after a long collegiate coaching career.

"I'm excited about getting to work with Coach Johnson. I've heard about him and we have the same purple blood running through our veins," said Deamer. "This weekend is all about making the coaching staff notice me and making a great impression. It's a great opportunity and especially since it's the Saints, the state's team."

Deamer made 43 tackles, seven for lost yards, including four sacks, and had two pass breakups and forced a fumble last fall. He had a career-best nine stops, including a half a sack, forced a fumble and broke up a pass as Northwestern upset nationally-ranked Central Arkansas 31-28 late in the season.

That was the start of three wins in the final four games by NSU, which finished with its best record since 2008, a 6-6 worksheet. Deamer had four or more tackles in seven games despite playing the second half of the season with a painful broken finger.

He graduated last fall and was voted a permanent team captain by his teammates, receiving a Joe Delaney Memorial Leadership Award. Players also chose him as the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player and coaches gave him a Sam Goodwin Link Award for effort, discipline, toughness, courage and and leadership.

White played in parts of eight games after having arthroscopic knee surgery in preseason. He still stacked up 44 tackles, including nine hits and a pass breakup in a season-ending 40-27 win over Stephen F. Austin. He had six tackles against Lamar in another win, and made four stops and broke up a pass in the UCA victory. White made eight tackles at McNeese.

Also presented a Sam Goodwin Link Award by the coaches, White graduated in the fall. He had the team's best 40-yard dash time, 4.69, at NSU's Pro Day in April and had a 9-4 standing broad jump.

White was the Louisiana Class 3A Defensive MVP as a senior at Redemptorist. He and Deamer were four-year letterwinners for the Demons.
