UPDATE: Caddo Parish Child Who Died in School Bus Accident Identified

Posted: Updated:
Authorities have identified a local child who died after being struck by school bus in north Shreveport.

On Thursday May 15, 2014, just before 4:00 p.m., members of the Shreveport Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash that occurred at the intersection of Winter Garden Drive near Addison Street in Shreveport's North Highlands neighborhood. Upon officer’s arrival at the crash, it was learned a six year old juvenile sustained serious injury after being struck by a Caddo Parish School bus he had just exited moments earlier. The child, identified as 6 year old Brenden Houston, was rushed to University Health Medical Center where he later died.

Shreveport Police Crash investigators were called to the scene and launched an inquiry into the accident. Preliminary information and evidence recovered at the scene of the accident suggests Houston was struck by the school bus driven by 59 year old Debra Kay Stevens of Hosston, Louisiana, as she made a turn onto Winter Garden Drive from Addison Street. It is believed Houston, after exiting the school bus along with a group of children, may have veered out of the sight of Stevens, and was thought to be clear of the bus prior to Stevens driving away. Investigators are in the process of reviewing video surveillance from the bus for further details on what events led up to the tragic event. In accordance with state laws, Stevens was subsequently transported to a local hospital for standard toxicological screening. While impairment is not suspected in the crash, the investigation remains underway.
