Just the right Cooks helps great menu in New Orleans

Posted: Updated:
Metairie, La - Saints rookie camp opened Friday. Five practices through the weekend for all the drafted and undrafted rookie to begin seeing what will be expected of them now.  No public availability made Friday, so we will have to wait until the weekend for our first look at Brandin Cooks and the other rookies in the Black and Gold.

Our draft expert, the Director of Operations for NFL Scouting Services, Dave-Te Thomas, had told us before the draft how wide receiver was a priority for the Saints and while Clemson’s Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans of Texas A&M were considered the top two, Thomas believes the Saints hit a home run drafting Cooks.

"I think that's probably the steal of the draft over here because I could have sworn San Francisco was going to do everything but sell the Golden Gate bridge to move up and get that guy.  I think if you look at the wide receivers, the kid out of LSU is probably the best value pick in this draft.  But then, right behind him, I would put Cooks.  I would take Cooks probably over any of the other wide receivers outside of the Big Two.

When asked how some people are concerned about his height and his ability to go up, Thomas did not waiver, “Oh, when you got a kid with a 42-inch vertical that thinks he's Superman, I'm not concerned about his height.  Look what he's done this year.  This year on his receptions he had 36 jump ball opportunities and he came down with the ball 31 times. 31 out of 36, I'm not really going to be out there concerned about a ballplayer that can't go up and sky. This kid can do it.  As a matter of fact, if I'm a low-flying pigeon? Stay away from the stadium that day."

With Drew Brees the main chef, the Saints may have just the right Cooks to spice up the menu.
