Insurance Commissioner advises homeowners to be prepared

Posted: Updated:
Almost a decade after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans says it's better protected than ever. But they stress residents should have their own hurricane plan and be ready to leave if an evacuation is called.

Losses from Hurricane Katrina are estimated at more than $70 billion dollars. That's why state insurance commissioner Jim Donelon says it's important for homeowners to be prepared. And he says the best way to do that is check your insurance policy and if you don't have flood insurance get some soon.

"It's the best property insurance buy that a property owner can make in our state. Because we not only have exposure for storm surges associated with hurricane events, we also have regular spring floods, " said Donelon.

Federal forecasters are expecting a slower-than-usual Atlantic hurricane season, with eight to 13 tropical storms and three to six hurricanes. That's because the weather phenomenon called El Nino is expected to suppress the storms' number and intensity. But the officials say all it takes is one slow-moving tropical storm heading to your city to make it a bad season for you.
