Twinning; ETBU twins bring spark to softball team

Team chemistry is so important to a squad's success and many programs preach a sense of family. This year's ETBU softball team took that to a new level when they signed twins Mallory and Maranda Westbrook. The Lady Tigers made a historic run in this year's NCAA Division III championship tournament. 

The Westbrook's bond is something not many people have the chance to experience.  It's just one of the things that caught the eyes of the ETBU coaching staff when they brought the twins to Marshall.

"When we were recruiting them, our focus was bringing in some excitement, some fire into our program.  Some kids that really knew how to play the game right and played it with heart," said head coach Janae Shirley.

"We knew playing ball we weren't going to be able to be separated, we had to have each other the whole way and then we found a team that wanted both of us.  And now we're actually doing it, playing together and it's a dream come true," explained Maranda.

"It's my other half, it really is.  And she is my best friend," added Mallory.

And it's that same bond that has kept their teammates guessing.

"They're so weird.  We'll just catch them off in the corner by themselves making a weird joke are looking at each other weird and we're just like, what are you doing?," said pitcher Shelby Parker.

"Everybody gets a best friend in life, but the twin connection is just different," added Maranda.

"Only twins actually understand the actual twin moments and the twin connection.  It's not something you can actually tell anybody else," described Mallory.

"We don't have to finish a sentence to be able to know what we're talking about.  We can even make hand gestures and their like ahhh!," joked Maranda.

The Westbrooks have become an important part of the Tiger roster and have impressed their coaches with more than just their play on the field.

"I played with my sister here at ETBU.  Just how they get along and how they're able to support each other is just so unique.  I went through the same experience with my sister here and there were times where I just wanted to rip her head off.  They never get to that point and it's definitely a unique relationship that they have," added Shirley.
