Tomato throwdown: Jacksonville, Texas

ArkLaTex (KTBS) -

"I can get a tomato, I can go to Walmart..."

"You can't get a Jacksonville tomato. You gotta buy a Jacksonville tomato in Jacksonville, Texas."

Yep there's no doubt they love their red ripe tomatoes in Jacksonville, Texas. Even an old Mississippi boy has been won over.

"I grew up in Mississippi, moved here 33 years ago and discovered the tomatoes here are much better than anywhere else."

That reminded me of a lady I met the other day in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. She wouldn't look at me but she was positive of one thing.

"They good. Grown in the country is why they are good. I just told you."

Yep, this is serious down south and out west.

"Yes we are."

Rick: "You're not playing around?"

"No. This is serious business, we have the best tomatoes."

And then I ran across a fellow who came all the way from Nacogdoches. He had a little attitude."

"Did you come all the way to Jacksonville to get Jacksonville tomatoes?"

"Absolutely. These are the best tomatoes you can have. They have the most wonderful flavor I don't know what it is about this special soil but they make good tomatoes."

It's that dirt thing all over again. The same thing they told me in Crystal Springs, but here they get real and mean.

"I see if I can hit people I don't like with a red ripe tomato. You want me to hit you?"

"No mam. You throw tomatoes at people?"

"Oh yes."

They call her the "tomato cheating celebrity aka Beverly."

And she's mean.

"You got a tomato thrown at you by the tomato cheating lady over there?"

"I'll get her better this next year."

You see in Jacksonville, they compete. Tomato eating, peeling, crazy looking and some of them don't take losing well.

"The fire department had to hose me down last year with two water hoses and the year before, the police took me off in the patrol car."

Yep, they'll do pretty much anything to protect the pride of Jacksonville tomatoes. So, Crystal Springs, get ready, you may be ducking more than just my camera.

"You know tomatoes are pretty firm, they can do some damage."

"I intend to do damage, I will mash them on you."
