Saints open important three day mini-camp

Posted: Updated:
Metairie, La - Before the Saints pack up and leave for training camp next month the team has one mandatory mini-camp.  That started Tuesday. Three important days withmore competition at key positions than the team has had in a long time.

Head coach Sean Payton wants the team to focus on the little things right now.  "You know it begins now and yet it's important that we're not making any instant evaluations.  We are evaluating how these guys are progressing.  I think they key now is giving them every opportunity to understand our system so they can execute full speed when we put pads on."

Linebacker Junior Galette has blossomed after first making the team as an undrafted free agent.  "It's hard to kind of work on your technique because we don't have pads on, but your steps and your footing and everything.  Everything matters right now."

"The retention is probably going to be the hardest part now,” says defensive lineman Cam Jordan.  “Now it's like, oh yeah I have to remember everything and that's what's been fun.  Some things are coming back and some things are like, we went over that last year?  I don't remember this."

While it is too early to decide some of those competitions, this time is very important to some of those young players who are fighting just to earn a spot on the roster.

Veteran corner Champ Bailey has seen it all. "You definitely want to open some eyes in some kind of way.  Coach is already aware of who you are and what you've done, but now it's about what you can do now.  It's a good chance for them to go out there and show a little bit of what they've got."

Quarterback Luke McCown is starting his 11th season in the NFL. "We used to say that those guys have to make a splash play every day.  Just something that makes the veteran players and coaches go, wow look at that guy, there he is again.  It doesn't have to be every play of the day, just once a day.  You keep getting recognized, keep getting seen, keep showing up on tape as doing the right thing and making a play and that's how you make an impression on a team."

Galette knows what the newcomers are facing. "There's less time now involved, less meeting time.  It's huge for rookies to take advantage of this little time that they have to get in their books right now so by the time camp comes there's no mental errors and making the same mistakes that they were making in April."

When the team gets to training camp in July, then the heat that will be on the players will not be from temperatures.
