Autopsy: Pregnant woman died from strangulation

Posted: Updated:
An autopsy shows that a pregnant woman found on the floor of her Terrytown apartment with several stab wounds actually died from strangulation.

Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich says none of the three stab wounds found on the body of 23-year-old Katherine Martinez was fatal. The New Orleans Advocate reports while Martinez's baby was not struck during the stabbing, it was not able to survive the attack.

Cvitanovich says it's still unclear whether Martinez was stabbed first then strangled.

Col John Fortunato, a sheriff's spokesman, says the sheriff's office is investigating the incident as a homicide and feticide.

Martinez's mother found her daughter just before midnight Saturday.

No motive or suspect in Martinez's death has been identified.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504- 822-1111.
