Shreveport's Dawson sights set high with Saints

Posted: Updated:
Metairie, La - Shreveport's Keyunta Dawson joined the Saints in mid-season last fall.  Dawson's career started with the Colts in 2007 before playing with three teams since 2011, but is hoping he's finally found an NFL home.

In a league with an average career length of just over 3 years Shreveport’s Keyunta Dawson has lasted seven and counting.  And during his second season with the New Orleans saints he's proving to the coaching staff why his name belongs on an NFL roster.

Veteran linebacker Parys Haralson has high praise for Dawson. "I think he's having probably the best camp out of all of us right now looking at what he's doing.  Look at him he understands the game, he comes in works hard, he;s smart, that's the kind of player he is."

"He's a dog,” says Junior Galette. “Obviously he's been under the radar like a lot of guys on the team.. find a way.. as explosive as he is.  he's got a lot of talent, got a lot in the tank left for a guy who's been playing 7-8 years."

Dawson is happy being with the Saints. "Being with the guys, being out here a full year.  That's big thing, just kind of learning the system and being in my sesecondear in my system and everything.  Just coming out here, having a good time and playing the game.

The Dawson name still has a strong influence in Shreveport football especially at Evangel where Keyunta played and his brother Byron now coaches.  The Eagles head coach also isn't surprised by his brother's career. "If you're consistent and coaches can depend on you and you're a guy that picks up the play book and learns the scheme real fast, I think there's always a spot for you."

With plenty of new and young faces on the defensive side of the ball in New Orleans, the seven year veteran Dawson has seen himself take a little bit of a different role in New Orleans. “I'm the second-oldest guy in my room right now so any tips, anything I can see to help a guy out I try to give it to him. I try to lead by example and go out there and play hard."

While Dawson has played on four different NFL teams, it's his most recent one that has made him and his family very happy. "We got a great group of guys,” says Keyunta.  “I'm back in my home state for the last part of my career so that's good.  I'm just happy and excited to try to go out there and do better than we did last year."

His brother Byron could not agree more. "For him to come full circle and end up playing for the home state team.  It was so tough several years ago when we went to the Super Bowl when he was with the Colts and he played the Saints, so it was tough on us.  But this year, when the Saints go to the Super Bowl, we'll be on the right side."
