Says there are allegations of veterans being put on secret waiting lists

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) is asking for a thorough investigation into the waitlist practices of Overton Brooks Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Vitter sent a letter to Richard J. Griffin, Acting Inspector General of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), urging him to investigate. A whistleblower from Overton Brooks came forward with allegations that VA administrators manipulate data on veterans' wait times.

"No veteran who served this country should be put on any secret waiting list. That's just disgraceful," Vitter said. "At a time when we're learning more and more about rampant mismanagement at the VA across the country, any internal allegations should be taken seriously and investigated."

The whistleblower, a licensed clinical social worker at Overton Brooks, accused the medical center of the following:
  • maintaining a "secret" wait list and manipulating the official Electronic Wait List (EWL)
  • using "gaming strategies" to manipulate reported wait times, for example: holding appointments without scheduling until capacity opens, or entering into the system that the patient requested an out-of-date appointment
  • providing group therapy appointments to mental health patients and counting these group sessions as an appointment with a primary care provider
