TRENDING NOW - Can sitting too long lead to cancer?

Posted: Updated:

Does your job require you to sit for a long periods of time? Are you spending many hours staring at the TV? A recent study shows that sitting too long may put you at a higher risk for certain types of cancer.

Just two more hours of sitting at your desk at work or kicking back in front of the TV is linked to a higher risk of several types of cancer, according to a study published this week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Researchers looked at more than 40 previous cancer studies that involved more than four million people to measure how cancer and sitting are linked.

They found that those two extra hours of sedentary behavior was linked to:

  • An 8% increased risk of colon cancer
  • A 10% increased risk of endometrial cancer
  • A 6% increased risk for lung cancer

One bright spot -- researchers did not find a link between sitting and all types of cancer, including breast and prostate cancer.

Of course the study doesn't say that sitting causes cancer, just that it appears to be a contributing factor. There are other factors like smoking, heavy drinking, and being overweight that can also increase your risks of getting cancer.
