Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame introduces new inductees

Posted: Updated:
NATCHITOCHES, La. - It's one of the biggest weeks of the year in Natchitoches.. The annual induction ceremony to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.  Thursday was the first chance to meet some of the new inductees and this year, for the first time, it actually took place "in" the Hall of Fame, which was opened just last year.

A tearful former Lady Techster, Venus Lacy, was emotional when talking about what this honor means to her. "I gave up a long time ago.  My momma died in 2009, I was sick and they didn't think I was going to make it.  You're looking at someone who was 400 pounds. But I'm here, and I'm happy and I'm going to enjoy this."

Former LSU offensive lineman Alan Faneca couldn’t be more thrilled. "I'm sitting back here and I'm looking at the logo and I just started thinking about my journey and how it began.  Thinking back to playing bitty basketball on the West Bank and representing the Jefferson Parish All Star Team and here I am now in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.  What a journey."

Former Tulane cornerback Lionel Washington always knew he could play.  "There was never a doubt.  After my senior year at Tulane University I knew that I belonged where I was.  It was just a matter of who was going to give me that opportunity and the St. Louis Cardinals, now the Phoenix Cardinals, gave me that opportunity.  I just wanted to make sure I was going to take advantage of that opportunity and that's what I did."

Reflecting, Faneca is among those who still love the journey. "When you look back on it afterwards, it's not really that one year to get to it.  It's like peewee ball, all the way there.  It's everything you put into it, all the work and here you are holding this trophy that says you're the best in the world.  The picture that they chose of me to draw is a picture of me holding that trophy and I get chills every time I see it."

"I'm still overwhelmed looking at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame,” says Washington.  “I look around the building and when I first walked in I see one of my special players, my special coaches Willie Brown, the great Willie Brown.  I saw that and it's like, I'm in the company of great greatness and it's still overwhelming I don't know what to say at times but I'm here."

This year's class also includes Saints owner Tom Benson, who was not able to attend.  The induction ceremonies take place on Saturday night.

The Ohio State marching band is moving forward without its director; a day after he was fired they're performing with the Columbus Symphony in what's often considered the band's unofficial season kickoff.
Having forced out a beloved football coach and watched its president retire after a series of verbal gaffes, Ohio State University again finds itself grabbing headlines with the firing of a celebrated marching band...
