Taxes, jobs, public safety dominate governor forum

Posted: Updated:
LITTLE ROCK, Ar. -

Addressing a convention full of mayors and other local governmental officials, gubernatorial candidates Mike Ross and Asa Hutchinson pledged to work closely with cities in the years ahead.

Hutchinson, a Republican, and Ross, the Democratic nominee, addressed the Arkansas Municipal League on Thursday. Each stressed that they had no intention of adding to municipal obligations without providing state funding.

The candidates, both former congressmen, engaged in a Q-and-A format and disagreed on a point regarding public safety. Ross said he wants alternative sentencing for non-violent offenders. Hutchinson's view is similar, but he said he favors prison time for burglars.

Ross reminded the packed banquet hall in Little Rock that he served on a county quorum court and Hutchinson told the group he is a former city attorney.
