Vitter speaks out about VA scandal, offers solution for better health care

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Senator David Vitter was in town to speak to Overton Brooks VA Hospital officials. In D.C., Vitter has shown great concern over the integrity of the VA system and spoke on the senate floor about the issue yesterday.

Friday, Vitter got his first chance to question Toby Matthew, the new Overton Brooks director, and Sandy Franks, hospital PR. Given the information Vitter has received by constituents and whistle blowers, he feels there is a long way to go in uncovering the truth. Vitter continues to focus on getting the VA inspector general to take a thorough look at Louisiana's VA hospitals. One solution the senator has for better health care access for veterans is by allowing more of them to take advantage private health care. Vitter says a reformation bill passed by the Senate does just that.

"Probably the single biggest reform contained in that bill is called Veterans Choice Guard," Vitter said. "So, any veteran who either is over 40 miles from the VA facility or is not getting timely appointments or service in a VA facility can go to another provider."

Witter is not yet sure if another outside agency will be needed in the investigation into Overton Brooks and other Louisiana VA systems.
