Jacob Hester hosts 6th successful football camp in Shreveport

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La - Shreveport native Jacob Hester held his 6th straight football camp Saturday with a couple of changes. It was a one day clinic out at Independence Stadium. Not knowing if the change in venue would affect the camp, Hester said he was excited when he pulled up for pre-registration that there were already 50 kids in line.

With over one-hundred participants, it was another successful showing for the camp, which focused on the special honor that Hester received at LSU, wearing the number 18 jersey. Four of the seven players who were chosen to wear that number were there to instruct the campers, including Coushatta native Bennie Logan, plus former LSU tight end Richard Dickson, and former Tiger running back Richard Murphy, all four having NFL experience. Current LSU freshman and former Parkway Panther Brandon Harris took a break from fighting for the quarterback job to also help out Hester's camp.

"It means a lot for me to have number 18 tradition guys out here and Brandon Harris out here giving up his time. He's in summer school and he's working out down at LSU. For him to drive all the way up here really means a lot to me too. We got a great mixture. We got Chase Pittman too, who played for LSU way back when I did so we got a great crowd," said Hester.

"Anytime we have a chance to get that group together it's always fun. It's good to see some of the younger guys that I didn't really know but wore number 18. I've been out here talking to them and it's fun," added Dickson.

"It's a great feeling just to catch up with the guys you played with, some you became close friends with after LSU. Jacob and I became real good friends a few years back and I worked his first camp with him," explained Logan.

"I feel honored to do it, I said yes I will do that. Some of the kids ask us about it and what does it mean. We tell them the advantages, the adversity, and the character that comes with carrying that number," described Murphy.

"I think Jacob definitely idolizes that. I think you can tell by his charisma and everything about him and how the kids just adapt to him. I just wish one day I could get anywhere near those shoes to fill," added Harris.
