Suspect wanted by Natchitoches parish authorities for attempted murder under arrest

NATCHITOCHES PARISH, La. (KTBS) - Update:


A Red River Parish man wanted on attempted murder charges by the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office in connection with an early morning shooting near the Fairview Alpha community in north Natchitoches Parish is now in custody according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones Jr.

Kenneth Dewayne Smith Jr., 30 of Coushatta, La., was taken into custody by Red River Parish Sheriff’s Deputies in the 900 block of Meeks Road at approximately 3:07pm without incident.

Smith will be booked into the Red River Parish Detention Center on Natchitoches Parish charges of 1-count of Attempted First Degree Murder in connection with the shooting, and then transferred to the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center.

No bond has been set.

Sheriff Jones stated since the investigation began earlier this morning, Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Red River Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Deputies have been working together in a joint effort to bring this suspect into custody. “We are pleased that an arrest has been made in this case, and no one else was injured during the process”.

Detectives will continue the investigation into the shooting, and turn the case over to the Natchitoches Parish District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

We thank Desoto Parish Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle, Red River Parish Sheriff Glen Edwards and all of the deputies that took part in the apprehension of this suspect. Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies are currently looking for a Red River Parish man wanted for attempted murder in connection with an early Sunday morning shooting near the Fairview Alpha community in north Natchitoches Parish.

On Sunday morning June 29th at around 4:30 a.m., police responded to a reported shooting on a logging road, off of the Messick Road near Fairview Alpha.

Officials say the victim of the shooting was transported from the scene by paramedics to the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Deputies are currently looking for 30-year-old Kenneth Dewayne Smith Jr. According to police smith is 5'11, weighs about 165 pounds, and has brownish-red hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing blue and white swimming shorts, a brown and white polo type shirt, and black flip flops. Smith’s last known address is in the 900 block of Meeks Road in Coushatta, La.

Deputies say a weapon was recovered at the crime scene although Smith may still be considered dangerous.

The investigation is currently continuing.  No other details are being released at this time.

Officials have searched the area along with tracking dogs throughout the morning but were unable to locate Smith.
