Shreveport blood center urges people to donate before 4th of July

Posted: Updated:

The 4th of July is Friday, and many of you are probably using this week to plan for a fun weekend. LifeShare wants you to fit them into your schedules. They need blood to save lives this holiday weekend. LifeShare knows most of you will be too busy to donate blood. They're urging you to donate before the fun begins and for a good reason, to save lives.

"We know there are going to be less people donating, especially on the 4th of July itself," Tina Martinez, LifeShare spokeswoman, said.

Martinez stresses blood supplies are currently low. She says with high school students out for summer, LifeShare has temporarily lost a large donor base.

"Right now, we're at a minimum level already, so if we miss a day of collections we can really slip into critical supply," Martinez said.

That means lives are on the line. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finds more than 700 people died in car crashes around the 4th of July holiday weekends from 2008 to 12. Those crashes involved alcohol. Martinez says blood is needed for crash victims expected this weekend.

"You can easily get through a hundred units of blood at a car accident," Martinez said. "That's particularly worrisome around this holiday weekend where we see automobile and boating accidents. things like that."

LifeShare blood centers are open Monday through Saturday. If you wish to give blood this you can at the donation center in Shreveport, which is located at 8910 Linwood Avenue. You can also visit the Bossier City location located at 1523 Doctors Drive. For more locations and hours, follow this link to LifeShare's website.
