Flash flooding in Arkansas forces evacuations

Posted: Updated:
Officials say water is beginning to recede in eastern Arkansas after flash floods closed several highways and caused families to leave their homes.

Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Yvette Smith tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that U.S. 70, Arkansas 86, and U.S. 49 in Monroe County are closed and underwater. Smith says she that although the water is receding, it's not enough to reopen highways yet.

Smith says several homes were evacuated in Monroe, Crittenden and St. Francis counties.

Chris Buonanno with the National Weather Service says some areas received 6 to 10 inches of rain overnight. He says that no more heavy rain is expected through Tuesday.
