Shreveport charity scrambling after thieves take HVAC unit

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La - The Mercy Center, a part of the Philadelphia Center, is a homeless shelter specializing in AIDS and HIV patients in Shreveport. The buildings are the homes that are being renovated so they can provide housing for those in need but on Thursday night someone-or a group of people-stole one complete HVAC unit and then vandalized and stole the copper out of another.

Today, where two heating and cooling units should be sit big hunks of useless metal.

No one was living in the homes during the renovations and unfortunately officials don't have any leads, or any information to help find those responsible.

Organizers with the mercy center say it's a tough situation for any non profit to be in.

Brett Malone, Philadelphia/Mercy Center official said, "We were pretty devastated that someone would actually target a charitable organization that provides housing to people who are homeless with disabilities including HIV. That doesn't even include the labor cost or having to re-enforce the security. They're really taking away from a community resource so we were very saddened by that."

The Philadelphia and Mercy Center are non profit charities.

Shreveport police are working the case but mercy center officials are asking anyone with any information to help in the investigation to call Crimestoppers at 318.673.7373.
