SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

An argument that erupted in gunfire left tragedy in its wake Sunday afternoon in Shreveport.

55-year-old Ruby Barnette was shot in the chest inside her Sidney Street home and later died at the hospital.

"There was a man that was residing in the home at the time the shooting occurred. He was detained by investigators yesterday afternoon," says SPD Cpl. Marcus Hines.

Hines says that man was later released after questioning, and that police believe Barnette wasn't the intended target.

He adds that those involved in the argument all lived in the home, where a small child was also present.

"This all began with a verbal dispute that turned physical, and weapons were produced."

And early Sunday morning, a fight between 20-year-old Shenikia Hall and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Brian Green, turned violent, after police say Hall stabbed Green in the neck in a jealous rage.

That happened at the Village Square Apartments in the 4200 block of Greenwood Lane about 5:30 a.m.

And while domestic violence comes in many forms, Mitzi Harris, Executive Director of Project Celebration and Taylor House, says it's crucial that DV services remain available.

"[Louisiana] still has the highest domestic violence homicide rates in the nation. It's imperative that [victims of abuse] have a place to go that need a safe haven," Harris says.

Project Celebration will be officially taking over domestic violence services from Providence House in the Shreveport-Bossier area at midnight, July 1st, "a seamless transition" Harris says, so those affected by domestic violence have somewhere to turn.

"Every year, more than 100 Louisiana kids lose a parent to domestic violence homicide."

So far, no charges have been filed in the death of Ruby Barnette, though polcie say it is still being investigated as a homicide.

However, Shenikia Hall has been charged with attempted second degree murder in the stabbing of Hall, who remains in serious - but stable - condition.

Project Celebration is the umbrella agency for a variety of services, including sexual assault, child advocacy, mental health and family resource center.

The agency will be taking over operations of the safe house in Shreveport, so that a haven remains available for those seeking shelter from abuse in and around the area.

The statewide crisis hotline 1-888-411-1333 can be reached 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, as well as the local hotline at (318) 226-5015 for immediate help.
