Summer started just a few weeks ago but it's already hot out and it's been that way for weeks now.

If you're coming out to the KTBS 2 KPXJ CW 21 Independence Day Festival on Friday

Or just planning to be outside, this weekend... Health officials say don't forget the essentials - like sunblock

we all know the rules when it comes to getting out in the sun.. And if you don't obey those rules we all know that there can be consequences.

But officials in our area are stressing again the importance of sunscreen and sunblock.

No matter who you talk to, doctors agree protecting your skin from damaging sun rays has it's health benefits.

As if keeping yourself safe from irritating sunburns or prevention from skin cancer isn't enough... Doctors also say that sunscreen and sunblock and help skin from appearing wrinkled and aging.

A local dermatologist says whether you're in the water or outside sunblock is a must.

"Whether you're swimming or not, there's no such thing as a water proof sunscreen. You will need to reapply about every hour or hour and a half if you're sweating a lot or out in the water. All sun damage is cumulative and it's often the sun burns that you suffer when you're a kid that causes skin cancer when you're an adult."

And the skin cancer foundation has some things you can do:

If you happen to get sunburned, act quickly.

If you start to feel a tingle or see any redness, start treatment.

Stay hydrated.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.

Dryer skin burns faster.

And don't wait to medicate.

If you get burnt, you can take some pain medicine.

But most importantly, be proactive and wear sunblock before you go out!
