BESE holds Common Core hearing

Posted: Updated:

The fight over common core practices continues.

The Board of Secondary Education held a hearing today on Governor Bobby Jindal's efforts to halt Common Core Standards in the state.

Jindal's administration suspended a contract to keep the education department from buying testing material for Common Core for third-grade students.

While lawmakers and education leaders debated governor"s executive orders-- to get rid of the standards, some say, teachers are the ones in the middle of the dispute.

"Common Core is a set of standards that says what a child should know. At the start of August the doors will open and students will enter our classrooms and teachers will be ready to teach," said Jackie Landsdale, with Red River United.

Lansdale says educators are feeling mixed emotions all of which could have been avoided if issues with Common Core where made clear.

"This has been a saga that started in 2012...and these are people that consider the constitution to be a set of guidelines as opposed to law," said Lansdale.
