Grambling interim president takes steps toward regaining credibility

Posted: Updated:
GRAMBLING, La. -  It did not take Grambling State University's new interim president, Dr. Cynthia Warrick long to make a significant step toward repairing the school's damaged athletic program.  Her first day on the job she fired athletic director Aaron James and men's basketball coach Joseph Price.  In two years under Price the tigers were just 5-52.. But the James firing could be more significant.

Grambling State University Interim President Cynthia Warrick, has released the following statement regarding personnel changes:

“My primary focus as Interim President is to move Grambling State University to a competitive position of excellence at every level.  I have started the process of making several strategic changes in my administrative team, which is a customary practice in transitions such as this.  The significant challenges facing Grambling make these decisions even more important, and I am committed to assembling the best talent possible in order to move the University forward.”

Part of those challenges are undoubtedly dealing with budget cuts, which all SWAC schools are facing.  But it was under the watch of athletic director Aaron James and previous president Frank Pogue that Grambling athletics drew national attention for conditions so poor and ignored for so long it ultimately led to the football players holding their one week walkout last fall.

At first glance it would appear Dr. Warrick cares about her athletic program in a way so many alumni and student athletes have been waiting and hoping for from university leadership.
