The Forth of July gives families and friends a great excuse to get together in the summer and see one another.

Shreveport, Bossier City as well as the KTBS 3/ KPXJ CW21 Independence Day Festival are great destinations for such reunions.

Joe Jernigan was out before 9am Thursday setting up the same spot his family has had for years to celebrate the Fourth of July. He roped it off earlier in the week to make sure they could keep the tradition going.

“It's a good safe place and it's usually an awesome fireworks display,” Jernigan said. “You hear the OOs and AHHs. That's the main thing—the fireworks display.”

Many families agree with Jernigan and host their reunions in the Shreveport-Bossier area each summer. The Convention and Tourism Bureau said last year they knew about 35 such parties but so far it's down this year.

“By this time last year, we had talked to about 25, and as of now, we've only talked to about 10 since June 1st,” said Chris Jay with the Bureau. “But I think the phone is beginning to ring right now. We spoke to three people yesterday planning family reunions before the end of August.”

People are setting up plans, like Jernigan sets up his spot with the most important people in mind.

“Family. I can't say enough. It wouldn't be possible without family and their support.”

With so many people coming into town for the event this weekend, a lot of money will be spent. In a 2011 study, people who came in just for the day spent about $20 a person while those who stayed the night spent about $90.
