SLIDESHOW-Patriotic makeover continues at Shreveport's RiverView Park

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Finishing touches are being put on RiverView Park in downtown Shreveport as the KTBS 3/KPXJ CW 21 Independence Day Festival approaches.  Tens of thousands of people are expected down on the riverfront for the massive festival on Friday.

KTBS 3 Station Manager George Sirven says pulling together such an event is a monumental task, but well worth it. "Each year, the KTBS team introduces our viewers to new ways of celebrating Independence Day. 2014 is no different! With two musical headliners - BJ Thomas and Rodney Atkins, numerous local entertainers, one of the largest indoor kids play area, a sanctioned steak cook-off presented by Brookshires, and the largest fireworks show in the ArkLaTex, KTBS/KPXJ’s Independence Day Festival is slated to be the best summer event in the Arklatex," Sirven promised.

The event kicks off bright and early with the Shreveport Farmer's Market at Festival Plaza. One of the highlights of the afternoon is sure to be the Brookshire's Louisiana Steak Cook-off. More than a dozen grillers from across the south are hoping to reign supreme with the first place winner walking away with a $2,000 prize. Portions of the tasty steaks will also be shared with those attending the festival. Those samples will be handed out between 3:15pm-4:15pm at the cook-off location along Clyde Fant Parkway in front of RiverView Hall. Brookshire's will also be serving up potato salad and baked beans.

There will be plenty for the kids to do at the Children's Play Area sponsored by LeBlanc's Pediatric Dentistry. There will be inflatables and lots of interactive activities. The Red River Waterway Commission will also be distributing a limited number of free life jackets as part of their water safety program.

The top-notch entertainment begins at 5pm on the MetroPCS Stage with local favorite Windstorm. They are followed by the legendary B.J. Thomas, country star Rodney Atkins and Shreveport native Michael Love. Love performs after what promises to be a spectacular fireworks display courtesy of Kilpatrick's Rose-Neath Funeral Homes.

Other sponsors include Eldorado Resort Casino Shreveport, The City of Shreveport, and the Caddo Commission. Plus we'll be on the Bossier side of the river, at the Louisiana Boardwalk, thanks to the Bossier Parish Police Jury.
