Water conservation order amended, Caddo residents can use water normally

Posted: Updated:

Residents in South Caddo parish that couldn't water their lawn or wash their cars for years following that devastating 2011 drought can use their well water a little more freely.

The Louisiana Commissioner of Conservation says the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer has returned to its pre-drought levels. This doesn't mean the emergency water conservation order set in place back in September 2011 has been lifted. The order has only been amended. This removes restrictions from residents that use well water.

Officials with the Red River Watershed Management Institute point out that industrial operators, such as in oil and gas drilling, are still restricted under the conservation order. Using monitoring wells throughout the parish, officials found aquifer water levels have risen enough to allow residents, like those in Keithville or the Ellerbe Road area, to consume water normally. However, residents are still urged to practice conservative water habits.

While residents return to their normal water use, watershed management officials hope to gather more information to help manage the aquifers. Residents should note, they also still can't dig new water wells without approval. For water conservation ideas and tips, follow this link to the state's conserve PDF.
