Backup plan; Saints' quarterbacks battle for spot behind Drew Brees

Posted: Updated:
Metairie, La -  A quarterback battle is the last thing one would expect to see in Saints training camp, but there is one brewing between Ryan Griffin and Luke McCown for the backup spot.

McCown, a Louisiana Tech alum, is entering his second year in New Orleans and has been in the NFL since 2004.  McCown has experienced plenty in the league and isn't afraid to share what he's learned with Griffin.  ""Competition just helps you get better.  I'm here to help Ryan get better.  I'm here to teach him whatever I've learned through the years and teach him to be a better player," says McCown.

Griffin is entering his second season in the NFL and spent most of last year on the New Orleans practice squad.  With quarterback injuries around the league last season the Saints did show their commitment to the Tulane quarterback by putting him on the roster to avoid another team signing him.  ""Just the confidence that they have in me.  They value me and I thought that was important," says Griffin. Starting quarterback Drew Brees has also noticed Griffin in practice saying, "Just the confidence level.  Just kind of a mastery of the offense.  He's very decisive, you see, he knows where he's going.  He's very confident with his throws.  He's locating the ball very well, very accurately.  I know that he's done a lot of things this offseason from a mechanics standpoint, in the weight room, and in other ways just to kind of fine tune his game and it shows right now.

As for McCown, he has his own views on the quarterback battle saying, "I'm trying to beat out Drew (Brees).  That's the mindset you have to have.  You're trying to push the guy.  I told Drew the other day I'm here to help you be the very best.  If that means try to complete more balls than you in a day, that's what I'm doing."

The Saints begin training camp in West Virginia on July 25.
