Thanks for helping make the KTBS 3/KPXJ CW 21 Independence Day festival a huge success!

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) -

Shreveport and Bossier City has proven once again that when it comes to throwing a party, organizers here know what they're doing and the community responds in a big way. The 6th Annual KTBS 3/KPXJ CW 21 Independence Day Festival was an enormous success thanks to careful planning and a little help from Mother Nature.

SPAR officials tell KTBS 3 News that the crowd along RiverView Park in downtown Shreveport swelled Friday to between 70,000 and 100,000. That's well above attendance in past years, and that's not counting the thousands who partied in Bossier City at the Louisiana Boardwalk. From the Shreveport Farmers' Market that kicked off bright and early, straight through to the Kilpatrick's Rose-Neath Funeral Homes fireworks display and the closing performance on stage, the entire day was spectacular.

Certainly one of the highlights this year was the addition of the Brookshire's Louisiana Steak Cook-off, a sanctioned event by the Steak Cook-off Association. Johnny Joseph of Milam Construction and James Ingram took home the top prize of $2,000 along with bragging rights. Also, thanks to Brookshire's for serving up potato salad and baked beans to the crowd! More than two dozen food and drink vendors also set up shop to satisfy appetites.

The top-notch entertainment included local favorite Windstorm, the legendary B.J. Thomas, country star Rodney Atkins and Shreveport native Michael Love on the MetroPCS Stage.

The Children's Area was a hit for the young ones and those young at heart. As part of their water safety program, the Red River Waterway Commission also distributed thousands of life jackets to parents with children. There was also a dragon boat race demonstration along the Red River.

The KTBS 3 Selfie Stations throughout the festival provided a perfect place for families and friends to capture the moment forever #ktbssalutes.

As always, thanks to the sponsors who helped make the festival a success. They include the City of Shreveport, the Caddo Parish Commission, the Red River Waterway Commission, Eldorado Resort Casino Shreveport, Brookshire's, Dr. LeBlanc and Associates, and Ivan Smith Furniture.

If you drive down St Vincent Avenue you'll notice Mall St Vincent is getting a makeover. Officials say the re-investment into Mall St Vincent saved the mall from closing down which would have left the city and this neighborhood with an empty shell of a mall left behind.
