Brady hunch; Mallett will get a chance.. with different team

Posted: Updated:
CARTHAGE, Tx - When the New England Patriots made Ryan Mallett a third round pick out of Arkansas in 2011, it was a good news, bad news situation for Mallett.  Learn while playing with Tom Brady, but with little chance to play barring injury. It's becoming a trend in the NFL; quarterbacks getting to start their rookie season. Meanwhile, the former Arkansas QB and Texas High School product has been waiting in the wings since being drafted in 2011 by the New England Patriots.  "Obviously, sure I'd love to play my rookie year, but it's also helped me that I didn't because now I've learned the game and not have to go in their under fire and not have all that pressure, but when I do now it's not going to be like it would be if I was a rookie, so I can't complain about anything."

Current Carthage head coach and Mallet’s former coach at Texas High, Scott Surratt says, "You see a lot of them not making it. It's probably 50/50 of those guys and they're switching quarterbacks already from two or three years ago and Ryan's learning from the best.”

Surratt thinks New England is the perfect place for Mallett, who is not only backing up but also learning from one of, if not the, league's best quarterbacks, Tom Brady.  "Playing with Tom, you know he's a great dude. I call him my older brother, pretty much. We're a lot alike. Whatever advice he gives me, I take it to heart and try to apply it to my game. I mean it's helped me to become a better player so I'm waiting for my chance, for my number's called to be ready."

"I think he's under the best organization with Coach Bellichick, and learned from Tom Brady,” says Surratt.  “I don't think there's a better situation for him and he'll be ready when it's time."

Surratt also thinks there's no question that Mallett will be an NFL starting quarterback in the next year or two.  "His contract year is coming up and they know how talented Ryan is and they know they're not going to be able to keep Ryan with Tom being the starter and still healthy, as long as Tom stays healthy, I anticipate Ryan being somewhere else."

Mallett is not worried, yet.  "You know what? I don't know right now. We'll see. Whatever happens, happens. Like I said, I'm just glad to be there, you know, in the league. And hopefully I can stay for a long time."

And what Mallett did not say, but could well be thinking is, stay in the league for a long time with a team where he gets the chance to play.
