Lessons learned Sunday at a local church could save lives.

Bossier Sheriff's Office instructors from the North Louisiana Criminal Justice Academy taught a Women's Self-Defense class Sunday afternoon to a group of 25 at Asbury United Methodist Church, primarily attended by mothers and their teen daughters.

The class provides basic skills and confidence measures to protect oneself at home or in the community.

It also helps heighten their situational awareness and encourage them to become more alert to their surroundings to avoid becoming victims of crime.

The eyes of the nation will be on Louisiana this November as the Senate race for the seat currently held by Mary Landrieu will be up for grabs. The outcome could determine who will control the United States Senate... Democrats or Republicans. With the stakes so high for both parties, millions of dollars have been flooding the state of Louisiana from outside, mostly from organizations called "Super PAC's".
