BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTBS) -

A lot has changed about Bossier City in the last 30 years, and a big part of those changes is how officials adapt to public safety.

"With the extra equipment that we have, the specialized training that has come about over the years, right now we don't have the room to facilitate that all in one place."

BCFD Chief of Communications Andy Holley says the $2.6 million project at Central Station on Beckett Street will take into account needs across the Bossier City Fire Department.

Part of those needs is improving quality of life at the station for those on the front line.

"This is a tough job and the hours can be long. If [firefighters] are coming back to state-of-the-art equipment, if they're coming back to great facilities, then naturally, the morale is better."

Holley says three additional bays will house specialized trucks, which are - right now - being kept mostly at the training facility on Shed Road.

"We'll have the specialized equipment located in the place where the people who are qualified to use it are [located]."

The expansion will also include updated living quarters, much-needed office space, and more classrooms for required training.

But most importantly, the changes will mean better response times, and ultimately, lives saved.

"The equipment will be here and available to us at the initial response. We don't have to get there, size the situation up, and then call for the equipment to be brought as we see that we need it."

The project also includes a much larger storage facility for medical items that must be kept behind locked doors.

Holley says even this expansion will begin to seem like cramped quarters before long, as the department continues to grow, but until then, employees will have room to breathe.

Construction is expected to wrap up on the station in October.
