Bowie County Commissioners address financial woes

Posted: Updated:
New Boston, TX -

Bowie County officials met Monday morning to revisit the issue of county workers and their pay.

Due to the large crowd of county employees and citizens, the commissioner's court meeting was moved to the Central Jury room.

The commissioners passed a motion clarifying that it will be up to each department to decide how to cut the 15 percent from their employees' salary, which will go into effect in August.

It passed four to one, with Judge Sterling Lacy being the descending vote.

After clarifying their actions, the department heads were given a chance to speak out on the issue.

Many of them expressed that they were worried about the cuts hurting the ones who make the least income.

"We cut these guys and gals salaries, they're already getting low money. Are they going to keep working for Bowie County, or they going to quit? A bunch have told me they will have to quit," said Bowie County Sheriff James Prince.

By law, elected officials will not be allowed to adjust their salaries until the beginning of next year's budget in two months.
