Three dozen Caddo teachers displaced

CADDO PARISH, La. (KTBS) -

The start of a new school year is fast approaching.

As teachers and students prepare for the first day of class, a number of Caddo teachers don't know where they'll be going.

Nearly three dozen Caddo Parish teachers don't know what classroom, or what school they'll be assigned

The moves comes after Louisiana Department of Education's Recovery School District's plan for transforming Caddo's lowest performing schools forced the district to start at ground zero, and required all staff to re-apply for their positions.

Caddo Parish Communication director, Bill Sharp, stated that most teachers where moved to other schools.

"There where four schools: Woodlawn High School; Fair Park High School; Midway and Atkins Elementary schools; school principals cleared staff. Some of the teachers where rehired but some have been displaced," said Sharp.

Red River United Teacher United Federation President, Jackie Landsdale, said the move is against department policies.

"If you go back and look on the audit report that we got from human resources, one of the recommendations on the audit report was to make sure you have everybody placed before you hire anybody new and we didn't do that," said Lansdale.

Sharp said all teachers displaced by the district's new transformation will be placed on a surplus list. "We will be meeting later on this week for the few that where left. It's about 30 of them and we've got a newly formed certified substitute pool to get everyone reassigned," said Sharp.

It's a dilemma; Lansdale said has placed a bad light on hard working teachers.

"How do you say that it's okay to put your teachers, your valued employees that you've had in your system out on a surplus list to be put into a pool and hire new people that you don't have any record on whatsoever? This is not to take away from new teachers, because we encourage new teachers to come into the system," said Lansdale.

In may of 2014, Caddo schools held several teacher job fairs to hire additional teachers for the district.
