BESE votes to join lawsuit challenging Jindal

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Louisiana's state school board has voted to join a lawsuit filed to challenge Gov. Bobby Jindal's efforts to block implementation of the Common Core education standards.

Jindal opposes the multi-state standards, while Education Superintendent John White and most members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education continue to support them.

WBRZ-TV reports the board voted 6-4 Tuesday to join the suit filed on behalf of several parents, educators and charter school managers in the state.

The lawsuit accuses Jindal of illegally meddling in education policy.

To undermine use of Common Core, Jindal suspended state testing contracts the state intended to use to buy testing material aligned with the standards. The move has stalled plans for students in third through eighth-grade. The school year starts in about two weeks.
