Shark Dissections, Fossil Making and More at Sci-Port

Shark Week at Sci-Port kicks off Saturday, August 9 through Sunday, August 17, Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center is celebrating Shark Week with special programs and demonstrations. A live dissection of a 27" pregnant dogfish shark is set to take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, August 9 and 10, as well as August 16 and 17.

Programs are free with Center admission and include:

Shark Anatomy: Let's take a close look at anatomy models and preserved shark body parts! Sensor Science: Smell is one of the first senses that come into play when a shark detects something in the water. How well can they smell? As well as you or better? Do this activity, and find out!Making Fossils: Make your own megalodon tooth fossil to take home! Sandpaper Shark Rub Drawings: Visitors in our Children's Gallery will have fun with shark drawings, as well as make their own shark jaws! Fossilized Shark Teeth: Can you find our shark teeth hidden in the Big Ramblin' Red? If so, take it home with you! The Center's Galaxy Café and Discoveries Unlimited Gift Shop will feature special items relating to sharks. Plus, a large megalodon jaw has been set up next to the lobby for photo opportunities for visitors.

The Discovery Channel's Shark Week series was originally developed to raise awareness and respect for sharks. On its 27th season, it is the longest running cable television series to date.
